Water Recycling Plant Design-Build Work Kicks-Off

[Ulaanbaatar city, June 13, 2022] - Kick-off meeting for the Water Recycling Plant Design-Build work was held in Paris conference room, Shangri-La Hotel on June 13, 2022.

Representatives of MCS Property LLC, which is the Design-Build Contractor for the Water Recycling Plant and its two specialized subcontractors from France, Egis Water and Maritime and Veolia Water Technologies internationally-recognized experienced companies, as well as representatives from MCA-Mongolia, MCC Resident Country Mission and Tetra Tech, the Program Management Consultant for MCA-Mongolia took part in the meeting. Officials from Ministry of Construction and Urban Development, Water Supply and Sewerage Authority of Ulaanbaatar city, Combined Heat and Power Plant #3, and Combined Heat and Power Plant #4 State-Owned Joint Stock Companies were also present.

MCA-Mongolia’s Acting CEO Ms. G.Uranchimeg highlighted in her opening remarks that the Water Recycling Plant is one of the two large water plants to be built under the Compact. She also expressed confidence in MCS Property, a leading local construction, project management and engineering company, and its two highly recognized and specialized subcontractors in this field- France's Egis Water and Maritime and Veolia Water Technologies – to demonstrate the exemplary and high-quality performance in the design and the construction of the Wastewater Recycling Plant, the first of its kind in Mongolia, and wished all the successful and timely completion of the project.

T.Khishigt, Director of Wastewater Recycling Activity, MCA-Mongolia, in his remarks, explained that once the Wastewater Recycling Plant is in full operation, it will treat 50,000 cubic meters/day of effluent from the New Central Wastewater Treatment Plant and deliver this recycled water to the Combined Heat and Power Plants #3 and #4, the city’s largest consumers of water, and emphasized that it will reduce the need for freshwater by up to 18 million cubic meters/ year, which is enough to supply 50% (102,247 households living in apartment buildings) of annual water consumption of all households living in apartment buildings in UB City in 2021, thereby will save the precious underground water resource and making it available for the water supply of UB city.

MCS Property LLC, a leading EPC contractor in Mongolia and now the contractor for the Design and Build work of the Water Recycling Plant, is a subsidiary of MCS Group and has successfully delivered more than 60 projects ranging from small to mega-scale and varying in residential, commercial, industrial, and mining projects including Shangri-La Center, Coca-Cola Factory, Tiger Brewery, Sky Resort Golf Course and Ski Resort, Intermed Hospital, NUBIA Aircraft Hangar, Bella Vista Luxury Apartment, Oyu Tolgoi Underground Constructions, and Ukhaa Khudag Mining developments. The project is subcontracted by two French companies, Egis Water and Maritime, an internationally recognized company in the field of engineering, consulting, and operation services, and Veolia Water Technologies, a world-renowned company in the field of water and wastewater management and energy services.

Construction of the Water Recycling Plant will be completed in the first quarter of 2025 and commissioned in the second quarter of 2025, after the completion of testing and adjustment.

This $462 million project is a partnership between the American and Mongolian people made possible by $350m in MCC grant funding and the $111.78m contribution from the Government of Mongolia which demonstrates their commitment to working together to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolia Water Compact is funding major infrastructure projects, including the construction of new wellfields and two large plants - an Advanced Water Purification Plant and Wastewater Recycling Plant which will be the first of their kind in Mongolia. In addition, the Compact will invest in policy measures to create a financially and environmentally sustainable future for the water sector of Ulaanbaatar. By 2026, the water system in Ulaanbaatar will have been expanded to deliver 80% more drinking water, allowing for the city’s future expansion.
